First stills experiment

Here are a few stills I have just print screened on my laptop. Some of the compositions are showing a lot of promise, I especially like the image of the two girls; it has that tension that I mentioned in earlier posts. I also want to look out for weird/interesting frames that don't make any sense, but are interesting because of that fact. I don't think I will keep looking for funny images though, as with the second image, I don't think they would work if I had tense or serious images in the mix. After the success of these images I am going to try photographing them on a tv screen to see if the context changes in a positive way and explore that more.

Cindy Sherman film stills

These images from Cindy Sherman's portfolio of 'Untitled Film Stills' are my favourite. I like seeing part of the whole picture or voyeuristic qualitites. Especially faces, I think missing out vital features like that force us to look at the actual form in the photograph, appreciate it more. This happens with peculiar images as well, as in some of Mitra Trabizian's, you dont understand what you are seeing and are forced to look deeper into the image. I won't be dressing up and starring in my own film stills however, it is a idea though to direct a film still and photograph it with actors though; I will investigate this more.

J. R. Hughto

I really like these images, the majority of them are photography rather than film stills but I can see the qualities in them I'm looking for in my film stills. Stark, open spaces with interesting colour schemes and nothing much actually happening. The bareness of it though adds to the wonder of the image though,  can't help but imagine what is going on in the pictures; why is the arm chair empty and lit with a dim light? why is there red in the window of the above house? And because colours have emotions attached to them, coupled with the fact its a film still, our imaginations run wild.

Mitra Trabizian

These are photographs and video stills from Mitra Tabrizian's work. There's a lot of tension in her images; you can't tell whats going on but have a feeling somethings happened or will do. I hadn't really thought of that aspect of my video stills, when I come to select the images I will look out for frames that have something going on in them, something that suggests to the viewer that there is a situation happening. Also though I want to incorporate strange things that are interesting to look at. For instance the third picture shown here is of a man and woman looking towards the ground, it doesn't feel uneasy, just peculiar.

Exhibiton In the City

For the new project 'Exhibition in the City' or 'Digital is about forgetting, analog is for remembering' I want to explore the concept of time, things that go unnoticed and how technology as come forward. I will start by investigating the technology side, find originals of inventions and document how they have progressed; an old Nokia mobile compared to a smartphone. This will be photographed in a forensic sort of way, to accentuate the stark gap between the two's capabilities.
I also want to use this as a starting point of exploring time; what is memory? What defines a memory that's worth holding onto? And for that matter what makes a memory so terrible we just want to forget it? For this I could take completely random pictures and then heavily thought of ones, and see what the outcomes are. I also want to investigate the biological side of the memory and see if I can find any leads for a project in that.
My final idea so far is exploring moments in time that are forgotten, but which should be remembered, or those that don't mean anything but there's no reason for them not to be important; asking the question what makes this moment fleeting and not taking note of. I am thinking of watching films on the internet and either waiting until it pauses to buffer to take a picture, or just taking pictures of frames I find interesting.
There are a few photographers and artists I have found already, Mitra Tabrizian; who works with film and photography, street photographers like Caspaar Claasan, Rob Hornstra and J.R. Hughto who also works with film.
Through these ways I hope to explore the premise of memory, time, technological and human progression.
